Friedman Benda at Design Miami/Paris

Raphael Navot, Acrostic Encompass

New York — For the second edition of Design Miami/Paris, Friedman Benda is proud to exhibit a selection of design works by leading international figures at the forefront of interdisciplinary innovation. All works will be shown in Paris for the first time.

In the unique historical context of the l’hôtel de Maisons, the gallery presents an ensemble of diverse approaches towards the domestic geography both in contrast and harmony with the surroundings.

At the heart of the presentation, Raphael Navot’s Encompass sofa highlights the Paris-based designer’s sense of composition, attentiveness to comfort and craftsmanship.

Navot’s charismatic sofa is framed by a pair of Fernando Laposse’s Avocado Skin cabinets, finished in an intricate marquetry, weaving innovative material research on by-products through traditional craft techniques to produce exquisite, relevant contemporary works of art.

Dr. Samuel Ross’ Amnesia or platelet apparition? and ANAESTHESIA I reflect upon the evocative power of materials to advance social commentary on architectural theories and the collective experience.

Joris Laarman’s Polygon chair is a captivating study in form and material where each piece is built from many parametric parts engineered to fit a complex, 3- dimensional puzzle. The Polygon model presents an elaborate iteration amongst the Makers series where the high variation of differentiated elements and the multiplicity of small parts enable greater freedom and expression of shape.

Daniel Arsham’s OFL desk and chair initiate a poetic conversation between translucency and structure in resin and wood. Building on his series ‘Objects for Living’, the American designer seeks to create works that exist in the domestic space between the past and the future.

Najla El Zein’s first series of glass works ‘Ensemble’ takes its name from the musical connotation and refers to the crafting process required to establish collaborative efforts and deep connections between designer and artisan. The result is a composition that in El Zein’s own words encompasses ‘Opacity, transparency, and everything in between’.

Andile Dyalvane, one of South Africa’s foremost ceramic artists, is included with a large ceramic vessel from his new body of work ‘OoNomathotholo; Ancestral Whispers’, premiering in Paris in parallel with his solo show at Friedman Benda New York.

Other highlights include a rare and early ceiling lamp by Ettore Sottsass previously exhibited in ‘Ettore Sottsass: L’objet Magique’ at the Centre Pompidou Paris, hyouri floor lamps by Japanese studio nendo recently shown at the Nijō castle in Kyotoand Joris Laarman’s ‘Maker Chair’exhibited in the travelling exhibition Joris Laarman Lab: Design in the Digital Age.

This presentation is completed with new unique works by Carmen D’Apollonio and Misha Kahn’s rock tables made with natural minerals in conversation with cast bronze.
