Sydney, Australia, October 23, 2024 – D’Lan Contemporary is pleased to announce that it will open a new gallery in Sydney on November 28, 2024. Located on Queen Street, Woollahra, D’Lan Contemporary Sydney will span the entire ground floor of the historic former Woollahra Post Office, a space most recently occupied by Bonhams auction house. Joining D’Lan Contemporary’s Melbourne and New York locations, the Sydney location will cement the gallery’s position as the largest commercial gallery dedicated to nurturing, celebrating and presenting the art and rich culture of Australian First Nations artists, both locally and globally.

D’Lan Davidson, Director and Founder of D’Lan Contemporary, said, “Australia will always be where our work begins. Establishing a presence in Sydney, where there is an enormous interest in First Nations art, is essential. We are dedicated to not only participating in but actively shaping this critical element of Australia’s art market while increasing the presence of these artists in the global market. One of our main aims is to foster growth and opportunity for First Nations artists, and contributing to the dynamic energy that defines Sydney’s art scene will become a large part of this endeavor.”

The new space in one of Sydney’s most storied gallery districts will host exhibitions by modern and contemporary First Nations artists along with a program of talks and events focused on promoting the growth and recognition of Australian First Nations artists. D’Lan Contemporary will inaugurate the space with REVERENCE, an exhibition of modern and contemporary works of art by many of Australia’s leading First Nations artists such as  Uta Uta Tjangala, George Tjungurrayi, Bill Whiskey Tjapaltjarri, Eubena Nampitjin and Carlene West.

Since launching in Melbourne in 2016, D’Lan Contemporary has steadily expanded its presence in Australia and overseas, opening a space in New York in May 2023, then debuting at Frieze Masters London in October 2023, becoming the first Australian gallery to ever participate in the fair. The gallery returns to Frieze Masters this October with a solo exhibition of significant works by Paddy Bedford, and in September, hosts the first New York solo presentation of artist Gunybi Ganambarr. The growth of the business has enabled the gallery to raise awareness of and appreciation for First Nations art on an international level while maintaining a leading presence in Australia. One important aspect of D’Lan Contemporary’s support for Australian First Nations communities includes contributing 30% of its net profits to those communities.

Lauren Harvey, Sydney Representative, said, “We have many valued clients in New South Wales both privately and institutionally and the opening of this space will enable us to engage and interact with existing and new clients more regularly. Sydney is a vibrant, art-loving city and we are excited to establish a permanent base here.”
