UNDER ARMOUR’S CONNECTED FITNESS MOVES INTO NEW WORKSPACE DESIGNED BY BOHLIN CYWINSKI JACKSON
San Francisco, CA (February 5, 2018) – Connected Fitness, part of Under Armour’s health and fitness division, has moved into a new office space designed by national architecture firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson (BCJ). Located in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood, the workplace helps advance the global athletic apparel company’s West Coast growth strategy.
The design team, based in BCJ’s San Francisco studio, redesigned multiple floors of a historic warehouse to serve as an adaptable and efficient space for Under Armour’s employees. The new 50,000-square-foot office gives the Connected Fitness team room for growth, and reinforces the company’s gritty brand with materials such as raw hot-rolled steel, rift-sawn white oak, exposed brick, and board-formed concrete.
“This industrial space is a perfect fit for Under Armour and their brand’s aesthetic,” said Greg Mottola, FAIA, design principal for the project. “Our design takes advantage of the building’s great bones and organizes the interiors to bring people together, reinforcing their team-focused culture.”
The project features a large ground floor communal kitchen that serves as a focal point for daily group lunches and cooking demonstrations for digital streaming on the brand’s MyFitnessPal blog. Gymnasium bleachers in the all- hands area can slide away when not in use, providing additional floor space for fitness classes and games, such as table-tennis, floor hockey, and indoor lacrosse.
This is the second workplace BCJ has designed for Under Armour; the firm’s Pittsburgh studio redesigned a former Sam’s Club warehouse for the company in 2016. Known as Building 37, the space accommodates approximately 600 employees in Baltimore’s Port Covington, where the company is headquartered.
