New York, NY, August 15, 2023: Howl! Happening is pleased to present Scooter LaForge: Tee Hee Hee – an exhibition of the East Village painter, sculpture, and designer’s hand-painted and one-of-a-kind tee shirt designs. LaForge’s work draws from a myriad of pop culture references and is influenced by queer culture, cartoons, and fashion as individual expression. This fall marks LaForge’s second show at Howl! Happening.
At Howl! Arts, Scooter LaForge is loved for his spontaneity, both in his creative gestures and in life. He is renowned as an experimenter and for his willingness to take a chance, and the energy of his creation is tangible both in his physical world and life, and in his diverse paintings, sculpture, clothing, jewelry, and set design. Rather than seek perfection in his paintings, LaForge’s work merges roughness with an elegance that continuously surprises. His work tells the ugly truths about injustice where he sees it while simultaneously giving his audience a world of sweet animals and creatures that open the heart and create smiles.
Wearing a t-shirt by Scooter is fun. You get noticed. They’re one of a kind, and the uniqueness of the wearer is reflected by the uniqueness of the piece. At Tee Hee Hee, Scooter’s pieces will continuously be available for purchase, and on the spot block printing and painting will replenish the works throughout the show. At Howl! Happening, a space devoted to preserving the past and celebrating the contemporary culture of the East Village and Lower East Side, Tee-Hee-Hee reflects LaForge’s unique ideas and stories through his unique designs.
About Scooter LaForge
Scooter LaForge (b. Las Cruces, New Mexico) is a New York-based artist who has lived in the East Village for the past 18 years. His unique style mines the catalog of art history by infusing classical themes with a colorful sensibility. LaForge works in various media, including painting, sculpture, and drawing, and employs unorthodox techniques and striking iconic images. Often combine-like, his works are a walking journal of images where ideas are explored and refined. LaForge approaches painting intuitively, absorbing what surrounds him and working on the canvas with agility and focus—drawing from a fertile inner emotional realm and an extensive painterly vocabulary. His paintings have been shown at the Leslie-Lohman Museum in New York, the Friedrichshof Museum in Vienna, and the Spritmuseum/Absolut Art Collection in Sweden. In 2015, the artist was awarded a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant. He holds a BFA in painting from the University of Arizona.
