Announces the Liu Shiming Internship
Supports one Liu Shiming Intern within the Guggenheim’s Summer Internship Program, beginning Summer 2026
New York, NY, February 26, 2026 — Liu Shiming Art Foundation (LSAF) is proud to partner with the Guggenheim New York to create the Liu Shiming Internship. Established through a formal gift agreement between LSAF and the Guggenheim, this initiative will serve as a vital pathway for emerging professionals to gain high-level institutional experience within one of the world’s leading cultural organizations.
The Liu Shiming Internship will launch with a one-time funded internship in Summer 2026. Following this inaugural cycle, the initiative will transition into a permanent endowment beginning in 2027, ensuring that one Liu Shiming Intern is supported annually in perpetuity. While the internship is made possible by LSAF, the Guggenheim New York will fully manage the recruitment, selection, and administration of the interns, who will be integrated into the museum’s prestigious summer internship program each year.
“We are deeply honored to collaborate with the Guggenheim to launch this internship opportunity,” says Puiking Hui, Executive Director of Liu Shiming Art Foundation. “The Guggenheim is not just a landmark arts institution, but a vibrant community of thinkers and creators. Through supporting Liu Shiming interns within this esteemed environment, we are proud to contribute to the network of young leaders who will have the opportunity to flourish under the guidance of the Guggenheim’s world-class mentors. This endowment ensures that Liu Shiming’s commitment to education will endure in perpetuity, providing the tools for a new generation to shape the future of the art world with the same empathy and curiosity that Liu brought to his own work.”
“We are grateful to the Liu Shiming Art Foundation for their visionary support of the next generation of museum professionals,” says Cyra Levenson, Deputy Director, Education and Public Engagement, Guggenheim New York. “Interns not only benefit from the experience of working alongside professionals, but our museum also benefits from their understanding of the future of the field.”
Guggenheim New York internships provide a unique opportunity for students and recent graduates to engage with the inner workings of a major museum with international reach. Participants gain hands-on experience through departmental placements, site visits, and seminars, joining an alumni network of leaders who have gone on to mold the global art world.
The creation of this internship marks a significant expansion of LSAF’s global philanthropic efforts, which also include their partnerships with over 50 higher education institutions around the world on scholarship and award programs for undergraduate and graduate students. LSAF supports emerging artists through their Artist Grants program and adjunct studio art professors through their Distinguished Educator Award. By aligning with the Guggenheim on this initiative, the Foundation follows in the spirit of Liu Shiming (1926–2010), whose work as a sculptor and educator was defined by profound empathy and support for artists and arts workers. This internship ensures that his legacy of fostering creative growth will continue to influence the next generation of museum leaders, curators, and educators.
