New York, NY – January XX, 2025 – Outsider Art Fair is proud to announce the 2025 Curated Space of Brazilian self-taught masters, Follow My Moves, at its 33rd edition. Follow My Moves will be preceded by Follow My Moves: Educational and Artistic Dynamics in Brazil, a talk featuring Dr. Mateus Nunes, curator of the project; Dr. Luis Pérez-Oramas, art curator and art historian; Dr. Edward J. Sullivan, professor of art history at NYU; and Dr. Bruno Pinheiro, postdoctoral fellow at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Follow My Moves is, by intention, an invitation to dance—not as a physical act, but as a metaphor for a dynamic, evolving, and continuous stream of thought. The exhibition offers a substantial glimpse into the intricate interplay of artistic and educational traditions in Brazil, spanning from the 1950s to the present. The richness of artistic expressions across this vast and diverse country encompasses both visual transmissions and oral histories, leading to the cultivation of a living creative legacy. Follow My Moves presents works by self-taught artists who are considered masters, both for their profound creative output and their significant pedagogical contributions.

Fueled by traditional knowledge, these artists reinterpreted aesthetic systems through direct dialogue with academic art. Often associated with narrow terms such as self-taught or arte popular, they navigated learning systems that do not conform to standardized Eurocentric and hegemonic traditions, thus amplifying the rigor and depth of their ideas. Their art transcends stylistic and categorical limitations, opening pathways to expansive frameworks of knowledge, time, subjectivity, and cultural transmission. Through initiatives such as Chico da Silva’s Pirambu Workshop, Maria Lira Marques’ artistic advocacy in the Vale do Jequitinhonha region, and Amadeo Luciano Lorenzato’s enduring aesthetic impact on his hometown of Belo Horizonte, these artists have left indelible marks on Brazilian art.

Follow My Moves will include works by the Brazilian masters Chico Da Silva, Niobe Xandó, Maria Lira Marques, Francisco Brennand, Amadeo Luciano Lorenzato, Conceição dos Bugres, Artur Pereira, Mirian Inêz da Silva, Rubem Valentim, Maria Auxiliadora and Zimar.

Follow My Moves: Educational and Artistic Dynamics in Brazil, the first event in the OAF Talks series this year, aims to discuss how the dynamics, movements and systems of art and education in Brazil are guided by non-hegemonic currents, consolidating itself as a vibrant multicultural organism whose complexity is not encompassed by Eurocentric and chronologically linear historiographies. The discussions explore theoretical and conceptual themes, such as the significance of the terms “outsider” and “autodidact” in relation to the production of the featured artists; cultural hybridisms of colonial origin that persist in Latin modernity and contemporaneity; and transdisciplinary historiographical models that more effectively address the complexity of these artists’ multivalent production. The analyses also examine specific aspects, including parallels between Brazilian and Venezuelan artistic production; the transit of ideas on art and race in Black Modernism throughout the Americas; and intersections among painting, geography, and education between Brazil and the United States.

Follow My Moves: Educational and Artistic Dynamics in Brazil will be held at the Americas Society/Council of the Americas at 680 Park Avenue in Manhattan on Tuesday, February 25 from 6 – 8 pm. The talk is open with RSVP to OAF VIP ticket holders and members of the media. Please RSVP to [email protected] to confirm your attendance.
