New York, NY(September 2025) – Goldman Properties and Goldman Global Arts announce the revival of the iconic Houston Bowery Wall, located at the bustling corner of Houston and Bowery Streets in New York City. Now complete, world-renowned contemporary artist Tomokazu “Matzu” Matsuyama has brought his signature cross-cultural visual language to the historic wall, recreating his dynamic mural Color Of The City that reflects the energy, diversity and global identity of New York City.

Color Of The City, first presented on polytab mural fabric in September, 2023, returns to the Bowery Wall with renewed vibrancy. The piece features 30 portraits of New Yorkers, including cultural icons, scenes from movies, and people the artist has photographed over two decades. Through layering Japanese and American imagery with contemporary textile motifs, the artwork blends tradition and modernity, East and West, embodying the artist’s vision of mirroring the hybrid culture of today’s world and the ever-evolving spirit of New York. The title reflects New York as a city of dualities, where its diverse and challenging nature allows minorities like Matzu to thrive globally. Additionally, Matzu previously collaborated with Goldman Global Arts in 2019 for a large-scale mural on the Houston Bowery Wall.

“Over the years, the Houston Bowery Wall has been an evolving conversation between the city and the artists who take it on,” said Jessica Goldman Srebnick, CEO of Goldman Global Arts and Co-Chair of Goldman Properties. “Welcoming Matzu back to revive the wall feels like a continuation of that dialogue. A reminder of how art has the power to transform a street corner into a place of inspiration and wonder. His work reminds us that the wall is not static; it continues to evolve, surprise, and inspire, just like the city itself.”

“New York is a place where cultures constantly overlap and create something new. With this mural, I wanted to reflect that dialogue, merging imagery from my Japanese heritage with the contemporary visual language of the city I now call home,” said artist Tomokazu Matsuyama. “The Bowery Wall is an iconic space, and it’s an honor to add my voice to its history again and contribute a work that mirrors the rhythm of the city itself.”

Born in 1976 in Gifu, Japan, Tomokazu Matsuyama is currently based in Brooklyn, New York. His multidisciplinary practice spans painting, sculpture, and installation, blending references from both Eastern and Western art histories while reflecting the complexities of global culture in the digital age. His major public art projects include Hanao-San (JR Shinjuku Station East Square, Tokyo, 2020) and Wheels of Fortune (Meiji Shrine, Tokyo, 2020, part of the Jingu Gaien Art Festival). Recent notable exhibitions include Liberation Back Home (SCAD Museum of Art, Savannah, 2025), Morning Sun (Edward Hopper House Museum, 2025), Tomokazu Matsuyama: FIRST LAST (Azabudai Hills Gallery, Tokyo, 2025), Mythologiques (Venice Biennale, 2024), MATSUYAMA Tomokazu: Fictional Landscape (Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art, 2023), and MATSUYAMA Tomokazu: Fictional Landscape (Shanghai Powerlong Museum, 2023). His work was also featured in Pop Forever. Tom Wesselmann &… at Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris (2024–2025).
