FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Zona Maco

Booth C211

Mexico City, Mexico February 7 – 11, 2018

Galerie Lelong & Co. is pleased to present for the second time at Zona Maco with work by Etel Adnan, Günther Förg, Alfredo Jaar, Samuel Levi Jones, Rosemary Laing, Ana Mendieta, Hélio Oiticica, Jaume Plensa, Zilia Sánchez, Nancy Spero, and Ursula von Rydingsvard. The booth demonstrates the gallery’s ongoing commitment to artists from Latin America in addition to introducing international artists that are less known in the region.

Highlights include sculptures by Jaume Plensa and Ursula von Rydingsvard, artists renowned for transforming raw materials evocative of nature’s artifacts into sculptural forms. While Plensa presents an ethereal portrait of nascent femininity in the alabaster Wilsis (2017), von

Rydingsvard creates deep, undulating furrows with a circular saw in MANILLA (2016) before enriching its textured wood surface with graphite.

The booth will also feature examples from Nancy Spero’s Artaud series and works from the 1980s focusing on Latin America. Opposite this will be several photographs by Ana Mendieta created in Mexico. Between 1973 and 1980, Mendieta made numerous trips to Mexico, a place that had a profound influence on her practice. On view will also be a painting by Zilia Sánchez titled Troyanas, which is indicative of her signature style achieved by stretching canvas over wooden armatures to create sensuous forms, and Hélio Oiticica’s Metasquema, a dynamic grid-like compositions created the year before he founded Neo-Concrete movement. Alfredo Jaar’s neon will glow outside the booth with a statement referring to the association many make between Latin America and Gabriel García Márquez’s novel of a similar title: Cien Años de Soledad [No Realmente] (“One Hundred Years of Solitude [Not Really]”).

On view in Mexico for the first time are works by Samuel Levi Jones, who deconstructs hardcover books to question the authority of the written word. Rarely seen works from Rosemary Laing’s Buddens series, recently unveiled at the Tarrawarra Museum of Art, focus on the themes of landscape and migration.
