for the Fourth Edition of UNTITLED, ART San Francisco

UNTITLED, ART is pleased to announce the nearly 60 international galleries and nonprofit arts organizations, from 12 countries and more than 20 cities, participating in the fourth edition of UNTITLED, ART San Francisco. Taking place from January 17–19, 2020, at San Francisco’s historic Pier 35 on The Embarcadero, the fair will feature presentations by leading contemporary artists as well as influential figures from the 20th century.

UNTITLED, ART San Francisco has expanded its Ambassadors Committee for the 2020 edition, adding 23 new individuals and couples, as the fair’s engagement with the art world continues to grow across the Bay Area. New strategic partnerships include a $10,000 booth prize sponsored by eBay, a special new commission presented by the Facebook Art Department, and an Artist Emergency Fund established by &Art& and supported by UNTITLED, ART. Additionally, New York–based art writer Brian Boucher will inaugurate the UNTITLED, ART San Francisco edition of the Writer in Residence program, publishing daily dispatches on highlights at the fair and around San Francisco.

“The fourth edition of UNTITLED, ART San Francisco truly embodies the spirit of San Francisco,” said Executive Director, Manuela Mozo. “As a city known for its ethos of innovation and entrepreneurship, set against the backdrop of important social and cultural legacies, this edition of the fair brings together younger artists creating work in diverse media and speaking to a range of contemporary issues, paired with historically important artists who were harbingers of change and new ideas in the 20th century.” 

EXHIBITOR HIGHLIGHTS

UNTITLED, ART San Francisco 2020 has been curated to complement collecting interests on the West Coast as well as current and upcoming museum exhibitions in the Bay Area. The following are selected highlights: Michael Rosenfeld Gallery, New York, will present a curated collection of artists included in the seminal exhibition Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power, currently on view at the de Young Museum. Chambers Fine Art, Beijing and New York, will present new works by artists such as Wu Jian’an, Song Hongquan, and photographer Pixy Liao. Photography continues to be a strength of the fair with Edwynn Houk Gallery, New York, pairing recent works by contemporary photographers from the gallery’s program with iconic masters of the 20th and 21st centuries. In addition, Rena Bransten Gallery, San Francisco, will partner with Chicago’s Stephen Daiter Gallery for a presentation that will include photographs by Dawoud Bey, ahead of his retrospective at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, opening in February 2020.

The fourth edition of UNTITLED, ART San Francisco will be the most international yet, with galleries hailing from such cities as Amsterdam, Barcelona, Luxembourg, Madrid, Moscow, Milan, Taipei, and Turku. Rutger Brandt Gallery joins the fair from Amsterdam, presenting works by photo-realist painter Yigal Ozeri. Returning Spanish galleries include POLÍGRAFA OBRA GRÁFICA, Barcelona, and Max Estrella, Madrid. Newcomers Zidoun-Bossuyt Gallery joins from Luxembourg, Syntax Gallery and Osnova gallery from Moscow (supported by Cube.Moscow), and Federico Luger (FL GALLERY) from Milan. Nunu Fine Art, Taipei, and MAKASIINI CONTEMPORARY, Turku, both return after their 2019 debuts.

From Latin America, several galleries and artists will present at the fair for the first time. Coming from São Paulo are Galeria Kogan Amaro and Zipper Galeria, which will present a solo presentation of work by Janaina Mello Landini, who recently completed a site-specific installation at Facebook as part of its Artists in Residence program. Also, GINSBERG, Lima, will present work by the Peruvian artists Aldo Chaparro and Frances Munar, who creates musical instruments from clay, using technology from the pre-Columbian Moche culture. Complementing these contemporary Latin American presentations will be works from the 20th century, including a solo booth of Cuban artist Carlos Alfonzo’s works from 1976 to 1990, presented by LnS Gallery, Miami, and New York–based Hutchinson Modern will offer a curated selection of geometric abstraction, with an emphasis on Argentine artists from 1935 through today.

Five new galleries from London will participate in the fair, including Lyndsey Ingram, with a curated presentation of prints and works on paper by Californian artists such as Richard Diebenkorn, David Hockney, and Ed Ruscha. BEERS London will present a solo presentation by Los Angeles–based artist Andy Dixon, whose recent work includes a collaboration with luxury fashion brand Versace. And Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery will feature a two-person presentation with Ethiopian artist Ephrem Solomon in dialogue with Nigerian artist Nengi Omuku. Combined, Solomon and Omuku’s figurative works employ a diverse set of media and address a number of contemporary issues, ranging from the effects of climate change to the politics of the human body.

Several galleries from the Los Angeles area will return to the fair with solo presentations, including Night Gallery, presenting new work by the artist JPW3 (aka John Patrick Walsh III), and Moskowitz Bayse, with a body of work that includes photographs, drawings, and video by Los Angeles–based artist Christopher Richmond. Royale Projects will feature a presentation on abstraction with artists from different generations, including Clinton Hill alongside popular contemporary Bay Area artist Heather Day. First-time exhibitor Peter Blake Gallery, Laguna Beach, will pay tribute to Bay Area artist Tony DeLap, with a curated selection of DeLap’s paintings made from the 1970s to 1990s, following the artist’s passing earlier this year.

New York galleries continue to have a strong presence at UNTITLED, ART San Francisco. Fort Gansevoort will feature a two-person presentation pairing Zoë Buckman with Christopher Myers. Both artists work in embroidery, fabric, and quilting, with Buckman’s work dealing with issues of femininity versus masculinity, while Myers’ work addresses identity politics, the history of refugees, race, and global migration. Jane Lombard Gallery’s presentation will feature the work of Kyoto-based Teppei Kaneuji, whose work investigates the mass consumption of contemporary Japanese culture, and Nancy Hoffman Gallery will honor the Bay Area’s legacy of figuration with a curated booth featuring the work of local artists Viola Frey, Timothy Cummings, and Colette Calascione as well as Chinese artist Hung Liu.

UNTITLED, ART San Francisco will continue to enjoy substantial participation from prominent San Francisco galleries, including Anglim Gilbert Gallery, Catharine Clark Gallery, and Gallery Wendi Norris. Among new San Francisco exhibitors, Rebecca Camacho Presents will feature a solo presentation by Uganda-born Leilah Babirye, and Dolby Chadwick Gallery will have a curated presentation of works by influential Bay Area sculptor Stephen De Staebler, alongside paintings by Terry St. John. UNTITLED, ART San Francisco continues to support local Bay Area nonprofit arts organizations by providing discounted booths. Nonprofit exhibitors for 2020 include the Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco, the FOR-SITE Foundation, and Creativity Explored, an organization committed to giving artists with developmental disabilities the means to create and share their artwork.

PARTNERSHIPS

UNTITLED, ART continues to grow its presence in different sectors of the Bay Area through an increasing number of strategic partnerships with prominent San Francisco–based and international companies, brands, and organizations.

eBay will join the fair as a Partner and sponsor a $10,000 booth prize. The winner of the eBay Booth Prize at UNTITLED, ART San Francisco will be announced on Friday, January 17, 2020, following selection by a jury of Bay Area museum directors and curators, including S. Sayre Batton, Oshman Executive Director at the San José Museum of Art, and Abby Chen, Head of the Contemporary Art Department at the Asian Art Museum

Facebook joins the fourth edition of UNTITLED, ART San Francisco as an Associate Partner, with a special on-site presentation by the writer and textile artist Kira Dominguez Hultgren. Organized by the Facebook Art Department, this newly commissioned, large-scale artwork by Dominguez Hultgren will grow and evolve throughout the duration of the fair, as the artist will be present, adding to her work and interacting with fairgoers in order to illuminate her weaving process.

Connecting with the extensive classic car community in the Bay Area and greater California, UNTITLED, ART San Francisco welcomes Hagerty^® as on official fair Partner. The Hagerty^® DriveShare program will be featured in the company’s on-site fair activation.

In partnership with &Art& and its founder Micki Meng, January 2020 will see the launch of a new three-year emergency fund supported by UNTITLED, ART. The &Art& Emergency Fund is the only active award program of its kind that offers immediate assistance to artists who live and work in the San Francisco Bay Area or have graduated with a visual arts degree from the San Francisco Bay Area.

Additional partners for UNTITLED, ART San Francisco 2020 will be announced in December 2020.

AMBASSADORS COMMITTEE

The Ambassadors Committee comprises many of the Bay Area’s top art collectors, museum directors, curators, art advisors, and other arts leaders who have been integral in helping to establish UNTITLED, ART San Francisco.

WRITER IN RESIDENCE (WIR)

The UNTITLED, ART Writer in Residence program is a new initiative to expand opportunities for art journalists and critics. UNTITLED, ART provides travel, accommodation, and an honorarium for one participant at UNTITLED, ART San Francisco 2020. The Writer in Residence is invited to create original content drawn from the fair, while also being at liberty to write for publications on topics not involving UNTITLED, ART.

New York–based art writer Brian Boucher will be the inaugural Writer in Residence for UNTITLED, ART San Francisco. Boucher has been an arts writer for more than 15 years, and his writings have appeared in Art in America, The Art Newspaper, Artnet, Cultured Magazine, GARAGE Magazine, and New York, among others.

PARTICIPATING EXHIBITORS

UNTITLED, ART is an international art fair that focuses on balance and integrity across all disciplines of contemporary art. Founded in 2012, UNTITLED, ART innovated the standard fair model by appointing a curatorial team to select and collaborate with galleries, artist-run exhibition spaces, and nonprofit institutions and organizations, in discussion with a site-specific, architecturally designed venue. The eighth edition of UNTITLED, ART Miami Beach will take place December 4–8, 2019, on the beach at Ocean Drive and 12^th Street, in Miami Beach. The fourth edition of UNTITLED, ART San Francisco will take place January 1­7–19, 2020, at Pier 35, 1454 The Embarcadero, in San Francisco.

Jeffrey Lawson is the Founder and owner of Art Fairs Unlimited, LLC; UNTITLED, ART; and ELEMENTS Global Trade Show, LLC. Lawson has produced and consulted on large-scale trade shows globally for the past 12 years. In 2010, he founded Elements Showcase. In 2012, he established UNTITLED, ART, which launched in December 2012 on the sands of Miami Beach at Ocean Drive and 12th Street and debuted on the West Coast in San Francisco in January 2017.

Executive Director Manuela Mozo leads international development and oversees UNTITLED, ART’s curatorial and strategic vision in Miami Beach and San Francisco. From 2013 to 2016, Manuela was a partner at Simon Lee Gallery, establishing its New York office. Prior, Manuela was a director at Metro Pictures (2005–2013) and Skarstedt Gallery (1998–2005), both in New York. Manuela holds a BA in art history from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and an MA in contemporary art theory and cultural studies from New York University. She currently sits on the Advisory Board of RxArt.

Kamal Zargar is Director of Strategic Development for UNTITLED, ART San Francisco, working with exhibiting galleries, developing strategic partnerships, and growing the Bay Area audience. Prior, Kamal worked for Frieze art fairs, managing institutional relationships and programming for North America, and at the National Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, both in Washington, DC. He holds an MA in art history from the University of California, Davis, and a BA in Italian language and studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
