NEW YORK, NY (November 9, 2022) — Traveling exhibition Beyond Territories- Made. Make. Making, presented by the Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA) with lead sponsor Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York, wrapped up in New York with a rave response from architects, academics, editors, and the members of the design community. The well-attended exhibition featured numerous models, photographs, drawings, videos, and interactive installations. The two accompanying symposia featured a robust lineup of architects, urban planners, academics and experts from Hong Kong, the U.K., and the U.S. engaging in an international dialogue and sharing ideas and issues that may influence the way they design cities in the future. The exhibition will make its final stop in Hong Kong where it will be on view December 9, 2022 – January 4, 2023.
Curated by Professor Bernard V. Lim of Architecture Design and Research Group Ltd.; Roger Wu, a veteran of architectural regeneration projects across Hong Kong, the Chinese Mainland, and the U.K.; and award-winning Hong Kong architect Stanley Siu, Beyond Territories focuses on the advances Hong Kong has made in the areas of urbanism and sustainability. The exhibition showcases the work of local and international architects whose work has defined the character of the city it is today. The exhibitors build upon the concept of the “City” as a common language to showcase modern multimedia narratives, allowing the audience to rediscover and appreciate the importance of architectural works.
“There were too many wonderful experiences of the New York exhibition to highlight in a few sentences. Apart from the great response from everyone on the exhibition itself, I was particularly pleased with the genuine exchange between representatives between HKIA, AIA HK, AIA NY and RIBA USA in the first day’s symposium as well as the sharing by the speakers of their work (some literally out-of-this world) in the second day’s symposium, all reinforcing the theme of the exhibition – ‘Beyond Territories’,” said Roger Wu.
“AIA New York was honored to collaborate with HKIA on Hong Kong’s anniversary celebration in New York City,” said Benjamin Prosky, Executive Director AIA New York and the Center for Architecture. “Members of AIA New York were thrilled to learn more about the rich legacy of architecture and design in Hong Kong, while also engaging in a meaningful dialogue with contemporary architects from Hong Kong through exchanges at the Center for Architecture.”
Divided into three zones, MADE, MAKE, and MAKING, each including innovative installations and multimedia displays co-created by architects and artists, the curation allows attendees to explore the chronology of the city: recalling past developments, evaluating contemporary issues, and pondering the future. Some of the exhibition highlights include Future-proof, presented by Henderson Land Group and designed by Story Lab Ltd., which features projects from one of Hong Kong’s major developers demonstrating the need to push for innovation to promote a sustainable future for Hong Kong. Housing for Millions, presented by Hong Kong Housing Authority, showcases a half-century of public housing in Hong Kong in tabbed displays that can be pulled down for visitors to learn more. Creating Better Lifescapes from Sino Group outlines Sustainability Vision 2030 and Decarbonization Blueprint, which cover crucial areas such as decarbonization, climate resilience, renewable energy, plastic reduction, green building certification and innovative solutions to contribute to a more sustainable future.
The symposia, held at the Center for Architecture and the Museum of Arts and Design, brought together design professionals, academics, researchers and institutional representatives for two days of inquiry and discourse centered around the exhibition’s theme of “Beyond Territories.” The presentations and discussions explored the topic’s various angles—from working in different countries and cultures to crossovers between the academia and practice, and the architecture’s relationship with other disciplines and its role in technology and future world.
The final installment of Beyond Territories will open on December 9, 2022, at the Annex, Nan Fung Place and the Asia Society Hong Kong Center, designed by New York-based Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects. Details and programming will be announced soon. https://m3beyond.hk/home/
