Two Palms at Art Basel Hong Kong
Two Palms is pleased to announce a selection of new works by Dana Schutz, Cecily Brown, Jeff Koons, Elizabeth Peyton, Mel Bochner, Stanley Whitney, and David Row to be shown at the 2019 edition of Art Basel Hong Kong.
The presentation will feature two new Jeff Koons Gazing Ball prints, Klimt The Kiss and Manet Le Dejeuner sur l’herbe, in which a highly-reflective, optically perfect, cobalt-blue gazing ball is added to prints that reference masterpieces from art history. Looking at the Gazing Ball works, the viewer sees oneself reflected in the mirrored surface at the same time one sees the print. This juxtaposition of art-historical reference from masters Gustav Klimt and Edouard Manet, with the viewer’s present-day reflection invites a dialogue about the meaning of time and how we transcend it.
Also debuting at Art Basel Hong Kong are a selection of new monotypes by Cecily Brown. Combining figuration and abstraction, Brown’s monotypes expand on the tradition of abstract expressionism, imbuing art historical reference with ideas of sexuality, attraction, and the body. A number of these prints were originally shown at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, where Cecily recently had a solo exhibition. In addition, Dana Schutz, often regarded by her peers and critics as one of the great painters of her generation, will be exhibiting 4 new monotypes. As with her paintings, Schutz’s prints draw influence from cubism and expressionism, but also other movements of the 20th and 21st century, creating images that feel familiar but that are entirely unique.
Other highlights include etchings by Elizabeth Peyton depicting Robert Mapplethorpe and Michelangelo, among others, and new monotypes from celebrated Conceptual artist, Mel Bochner. David Row’s large-scale silkscreens printed with UV ink and Stanley Whitney’s vibrant monotypes will also be on view.
