Galerie St. Etienne at Art Basel 2019
At the 2019 edition of Art Basel, Switzerland, Galerie St. Etienne is pleased to present a selection of works by celebrated German and Austrian artists commemorating the gallery’s 80th anniversary. The artists on view — including Egon Schiele, Käthe Kollwitz, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, George Grosz, and Otto Dix — reflect the gallery’s renowned history of representing artists who have since become synonymous with Austrian and German Expressionism. The gallery will feature a solo room of drawings by Schiele, whom the gallery introduced to the United States in 1940.
Additionally, a selection of works will be on view by Galerie St. Etienne’s sole contemporary artist, Sue Coe, who was recently the subject of a retrospective at MoMA PS1. Coe, who focuses on environmental and political issues, has produced a new series for Art Basel highlighting the city’s status as a center of the pharmaceutical industry. Mirroring the likes of Kollwitz, Dix and Grosz — all artists motivated by a desire to expose and thereby ameliorate social injustice — Coe’s presence underscores the continued relevance of the historic artists St. Etienne represents.
