Canberra, Australia – November 24, 2025 – Home to the largest collection of post-war American art outside the United States, the National Gallery of Australia has released a comprehensive three-volume publication, Tyler Graphics: Catalogue Raisonné, 1986–2001. Six years in the making, this extensive scholarly work chronicles 15 highly experimental and productive years for the American master printmaker Kenneth E. Tyler AO (b. 1931).

Working with iconic artists such as David Hockney, Helen Frankenthaler, Roy Lichtenstein, Joan Mitchell, Andy Warhol and Frank Stella, Tyler became a seminal figure in the renaissance of 20th century American print making.

Building a career on the belief that “great prints are made only by great artists” Tyler was renowned for pushing the boundaries of technology and creative determination. His Tyler Graphics workshop in Bedford Village and Mount Kisco, New York, became a nucleus of experimentation where he collaborated with titans of modern and postmodern American art, providing them with the collaboration, facilities, and encouragement to realize prints of unprecedented scale and complexity.

The Kenneth E. Tyler Collection at the National Gallery of Australia is the world’s most comprehensive collection of prints produced by the printmaker and publisher. Beginning in 1973, the collection now contains over 7,400 editioned prints, proofs, drawings, paper works, screens, multiples and illustrated books as well as a significant archive of photography, film, audio and workshop materials.

“The bond between Kenneth Tyler and the National Gallery of Australia is arguably the most important collecting relationship in our history,” says National Gallery Director Dr Nick Mitzevich. “The publication of this catalogue raisonné is the definitive scholarly key to unlocking Tyler’s technical genius and sheer audacity that came to define American printmaking for a generation and which has in turn inspired so many Australians. We’re delighted to share this vital body of work with the world.”

“Documentation is critical to understand the origin and anatomy of a print as it describes the details of a work and ensures its history will be preserved for future viewings by the public and scholars alike,” says printmaker Kenneth E. Tyler AO.  “Expanding the boundaries of artistic expression in printmaking became my mission for the workshops and I welcome with great pride the publication of this new catalogue raisonné.”

Through August 2, 2026,the National Gallery will have on view Proofs and Processes: The Kenneth Tyler Collection, which features works on paper by six icons of Abstraction and Pop art, all of whose collaborations with Tyler are discussed in the catalogue raisonné. At the IFPDA Print Fair in April, 2026 in New York, the National Gallery will feature the catalogue raisonné in its programming for international audiences, curators, and collectors. More details will be announced in the coming weeks.
